Following Your Purpose One Layer at a Time

First, a bit of backstory…

For those of you who don’t already know, I am part of an international networking and referral group called BNI, Business Networking International. This group has been an excellent way to find referral partners who are gifted in their fields and who operate with integrity. We have lunch together every week and focus on how we can help grow each others’ businesses. I LOVE it!

In April, I attended a BNI meeting in Austin. I had originally signed up to attend for a different business I was working with; but when I left that company, I decided I would attend this meeting for myself to see what that group did differently from my own.

This meeting was LIFE CHANGING for me, even though I didn’t know it at the time. It was at this meeting that I met Cassie Pusey of Brillant People (mybrilliantpeople.com). We immediately connected on our business names, and a few weeks later, she and her business partner, Whitney Nelson, introduced me to the concept of PAiLS.

pails imagePAiLS stands for Potential Actualized into Legacy and Spillage. The idea is simple… we all have unlimited potential to be turned into our legacy, but life often knocks into our buckets and a lot of our potential is spilled onto the floor around us. This was a concept I already believed in, but now it was in a format that anyone could understand, Accordineven me.

From that point forward, PAiLS by Chris Brady of the Life Leadership Company became an integral part of my coaching practice. I immediately joined Brilliant People’s MasterMind group and began to immerse myself in the curriculum so I could share it with others. I found we can live our purpose one layer at a time, and even use those layers to figure out our purpose in life.

According to Chris Brady, our lives have four layers. The first layer, or the foundation, is made up of our past experiences, our education, and our everything that happened to use early on in life. This layer is the major part of what made us who we are and created the paradigm with which we see the world.

The next layer is made up of the pragmatic, or realistic, occupation(s) we have had in life. Basically, it is what we decided to do to make money. Passion is the third layer of the cake. It is comprised of what gives us passion in life, what makes us happy and gives us joy in life. The final layer is our divine purpose, what gives our lives a deeper meaning and leaves the legacy we were created to fulfill. Foundation

If we look at our own experiences in life, we can usually see how our life falls into these layers. In my own life, I see it. In my professional life, I help others see it.

We were all created for something bigger than ourselves. Most of us get to a point in life where what we are doing doesn’t fulfill us anymore and we know we are missing something. For many of us, purpose is what is missing. Purpose is an understanding of why you are on this Earth and what you are created to do; it is about bringing joy to those around you.

Purpose is something very few people understand early on in life. For those that do, more of their potential is actualized into their legacy. For those of us who do not know our purpose at a young age, we will eventually find ourselves at a crossroads, where discover something is missing. If this is you, the first thing I want you to tell yourself is that you are not alone. It was me too! As a matter of fact, I just recently figured out what my true purpose is in life. And, you know what, that’s okay! We aren’t broken, and it’s not too late to figure out our purpose now.

The next thing I want you to do, is to see if you can place your life in these layers. Start with the bottom layer. List your life experiences that stand out  and write down your educational and training experiences.

Then, think about your occupation. What do you do to make money? That is the realistic occupation layer of your cake. Most of us don’t jump from high school or college straight into pursuing our passions in life. It’s okay if you are in a profession to provide a stable income for yourself and/or your family. For those of us who are older, this layer is the easiest because we are working in it now or have in the past. If you are younger, this might be a hard step because it will be what you want to do when you graduate. If you don’t know the answer to that, it’s okay. I can help with that. 😉

Now, take a look at what makes you happy in life. What are you passionate about? What gives you joy? Write those things down in this layer. Take time in this layer and don’t rush the reflection. This layer will help you take steps toward finding your higher purpose because our passions are usually related to what we are created to do.

The top layer of your life cake is your divine purpose, what you were born to do. As you reflect over the previous layers of your life, look for themes or commonalities. How do your experiences relate to your passions? What training and education do you have and how does it relate to your passions? What occupation are you currently in? How can it help you live out your passions? Creating these types of connections is usually the hardest part. This is the part where you might discover the need for a coach. Believe it or not, this is my divine purpose.

If you struggle to see yourself and see tons of spillage where your potential hasn’t landed in the legacy bucket, contact me. If you are searching for deeper meaning and aren’t sure what it is yet. I can help. If you are trying to create the perfect life layer cake but aren’t sure what goes in each layer, I am here for you.

If you think I am nutty and you are full of joy and happy with where your life is going, then praise the LORD! I’m not the coach for you, and that is okay too! You can still read my blogs and enjoy the content I share.

All that really matters is whether or not we are living lives full of meaning and leaving a legacy behind. Because in the end, we all leave this world for the next, and we want to be remembered for what we did while we were here.

For that reason, the only thing that matters is the potential that makes it into your legacy bucket. Right now, today, you already have everything you need to fill that bucket. You just might need to find the tools to funnel your potential into it.

I can help you find the funnels. Then, YOU can create a life of legacy.

Be Brilliant, Be Amazing, but most of all, BeYOUtiful!

Heidi
